Investing in ourselves
‘Own’ Improvement
Are you having a new kitchen this year? So many people I talk to are having new kitchens, new bathrooms, getting the decorating done or landscaping their outdoor spaces. They are investing in their interiors and outdoor spaces because the rest of the world has been so closed down.
Make it look pretty. Make it look new. Make it more functional, so that living within that space becomes more joyful. I see the sense in this. Maybe this idea could go deeper than this? What about our interior, why not delve into the interior of our self? Look at our self physically, emotionally and spiritually.
For many it is difficult to look so deeply at someone who hasn’t been concentrated on in a long time. Someone who has been a route to help others succeed, someone who had provided the environment for others to grow and develop, someone who had focused on everyone but themselves. A bit like a plant that has been neglected, the signs of neglect can be obvious when the focus turns back to it. Starting can be difficult. But necessary.
When you begin your home improvements, the first thing you do is strip everything back to the bare bones. You remove all aspects that will hinder these improvements, the pictures, the furniture, the old wallpaper and sometimes even the walls. Stripping back what has been laid there for so long, so that a new perspective can come into that new space. It takes time and thought and effort, but it gives way to the new. The joy is that every day we are given, provides us with a new opportunity for us to choose how we show up in the world. We search for the right colours, mirrors and furniture to fit our home. Why not search for new habits, goals and purpose to fit our ‘inner’ world. As we grow this becomes easier, because we start to furnish ourselves with a new spirit, new strength and new purpose, we see less blemish and more beauty within ourselves.
No matter how much ‘own’ improvement is needed, when the work starts, every tiny improvement bring a new joy to life and inspired more room to change, to just be, to just show up, to be Authentic.
